The Wave Came Without Me

By Ray Diaz · August 2026

In 2016 I was making an argument almost nobody wanted to hear.

The argument was that a trained actor with real credits belonged in digital media. That the two worlds were not separate, that credibility from one could carry into the other, and that the people who figured it out early would build something that lasted. At the time this was not obvious. Traditional Hollywood looked down on creators. Creators thought actors were dinosaurs. I was standing in the middle telling both sides they were wrong.

I put my money behind it. Commercials and scripted television on one hand, a million followers in three months on the other, a supplement sponsorship, and then some of the first influencer built fitness programs on Fitplan. Proof, not theory.

Then 2020 happened, and the entire world proved my argument for me.

Everything went digital because it had no choice. Brands moved their whole budgets to creators. Studios and networks started looking at follower counts. Fitness left the gym and lived on a phone. Every single thing I had been saying since 2016 became the default assumption of the entire industry in about eighteen months.

And I was not in it.

Those were the years my case was still open. That is the plainest way I can say it. The wave I had been describing to anyone who would listen finally broke, and I was standing somewhere else, unable to work, watching it happen.

There is no villain in this story. Nobody stole anything from me. A pandemic changed the world on a timeline that had nothing to do with my life, and it collided with the worst stretch of it. Sometimes that is all it is. Timing.

But I will not pretend it does not sting. I know exactly what I would have built in those years. I had the credits, the audience, the brand relationships, the training programs, and a decade of understanding how both industries actually work. That was my moment and I could see it from where I was standing.

People look at a career and see a gap and they assume the person stopped. I did not stop. I was held.

Here is what I have made peace with. The thesis was right. Everything I said would happen, happened. And the fact that I could not ride it does not make me wrong, it makes me early, and early is not a failure. Early is just expensive.

The wave came without me. Waves keep coming.
